The Automobile Association, normally simply referred to as the AA, is an iconic British motoring association that was founded in 1905 to help motorists avoid police speed traps, in response to the Motor Car Act 1903 which introduced penalties for driving offences such as breaking the speed limit and reckless driving which included fines, endorsements and even jail sentences for driving offences. Following demutualisation in 1999, the AA Motoring Trust was set up in 2002 to continue public interest and road safety activities. In 2007 the AA merged with the Saga Group to form Acromas Holdings.
